Inside Johnny Depp’s French Estate
Johnny Depp first acquired his Plan de la Tour home back in 2001. Largely unheard of, Plan de la Tour is a little village in the heart of the Maures massif which is surrounded by natural beauty. It's not somewhere you pass through by accident as the road taking you here simply doesn't go anywhere else, gifting the village and its residents the perfect protection of their tranquillity and privacy.
For Johnny and Vanessa Paradis, his partner at the time, this sprawling estate became their idyllic and regular retreat away from the hustle and bustle of Hollywood. A place where they were able to recharge their batteries, reconnect with nature and teach their two children Lily-Rose and Jack, to appreciate and respect a healthy and down to earth lifestyle.
More than just a fine example of a luxury French property with a celebrity owner, this truly remarkable estate is set on 15 hectares (approx. 37 acres) and is classified as an “hameau” which is a small, private Provençal village to you and me.
The gentle undulating landscape of this private village is home to immaculately landscaped grounds with manicured lawns, vines, olive trees, a vegetable garden and numerous fountains. To inject a sense of fun and relaxation so often enjoyed by the current owners there are two swimming pools, the larger of which is surrounded by sand and has its own beach bar, as well as an elaborate skateboard ring.
The stone built houses throughout the village date back more than 200 years to 1812 and they have all been lovingly restored and transformed by Johnny himself who unlike many other celebrity homeowners, chose not to use the services of an interior designer.
The interior reflects his unique character and taste and the result isn’t the glitzy show home we have come to expect from a celebrity pad but instead, this is an utterly charming home with an distinctively bohemian atmosphere and an abundance of personal touches.
In addition to the main house there are more than a dozen buildings which include several guest cottages, a chapel, bar and restaurant, workshop/garage, children’s playroom, romantic hunter’s cabin, fitness space, professional kitchen and separate staff house.
The various dwellings offer a combined total of 12 bedrooms and 12 bathrooms leaving plenty of space for both you and your guests to enjoy some privacy.
There is also a painter’s studio as it is a lesser known fact that Johnny Depp is also a very accomplished artist. He has painted many famous faces including Bob Dylan, Patti Smith and Marlon Brando and many of his artworks were produced from the studio within this very estate.
This exceptional estate represents the very epitome of Mediterranean living with it’s history, natural environment, unique characteristics and idyllic lifestyle offering. The new owners can also benefit from a rather unique opportunity to acquire some of this Hollywood star’s personal items as many artefacts as well as all the furniture are included in the sale.
The asking price for the property is approximately $25.76 million (€23.056 million) which is an honest reflection of many contributing factors including the unique character of the property, local property values, over $10 million of investment injected in the property by Johnny Depp and of course, those additional items.
Alexander Kraft, Sotheby's International Realty France
Alexander Kraft is the Chairman & CEO of Sotheby's International Realty France as well as a leading figure in European luxury real estate. Representing this property and speaking on behalf of its current owner, Alexander Kraft explains that Johnny Depp is ready to sell his Le Plan de la Tour estate to close a chapter of his life and that he hopes someone else will be able to enjoy the property as much as he has.
There are so many different elements which can be attributed to the uniqueness of this extraordinary real estate opportunity but nobody can explain it better than Alexander Kraft himself:
"Where else in the world can guests sleep in a converted village church, sample wines in a tasting cave that resembles a “Pirates of the Caribbean” set, and in the evening meet in an authentic Provençal village restaurant and bar?
In a rare move seldom seen in real estate sales of similar character, the price actually includes all of the property's furniture and a great number of personal belongings of Johnny Depp. Thus, the purchaser will be able to not only acquire an exceptional property, but also many personal items of one of the greatest stars of our times".
Johnny Depp is undoubtedly one of modern Hollywood’s most versatile actors. Beginning his professional life as a ballpoint-pen salesman in Florida, it was only after a chance visit to Los Angeles where he met up with Nicholas Cage that he decided to try his hand at acting. The rest as they say, is history.
Following the success of Edward Scissorhands, in which he played the title role, Johnny Depp has become a serious yet eccentric, dark and idiosyncratic actor able to surprise critics and audiences alike with his unique character interpretations. Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean, the Mad Hatter in the 2010 remake of Alice in Wonderland and Sleepy Hollow’s Ichabod Crane, just a small handful of iconic characters that nobody could portray in the same way as Johnny Depp.
Saint Tropez de Cote d’Azur
The property is located in the picturesque village of Plan de la Tour in Southern France, approximately 25 km (17 miles) north of legendary Mediterranean resort, Saint Tropez. The international airport of Nice is 80 minutes away and the city of Cannes just 60 minutes.
Located in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur region of France, Saint Tropez has evolved from being a charming fishing village with a small port and 15th Century chapel, in to one of the most glamorous and sought after destinations throughout the whole Mediterranean and beyond.
Home to mega yachts, world class restaurants, luxury brands and famous beaches, hotels and nightclubs, Saint Tropez has become a legendary summer resort attracting an eclectic crowd from around the world.
